The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) requires most Commercial health plans to cover a range of preventive services and products at no cost to patients. To remain compliant, each Commercial payer establishes and maintains a Preventive Drug List (PDL) that specifies a list of preventive products and services, as mandated by the law.
For drug or medical device manufacturers developing products with potential preventive use, getting onto a payer’s PDL provides an opportunity to minimize access barriers from a coverage, reimbursement and patient cost sharing standpoint. It could, potentially, also allow for increased patient awareness, product utilization and maximized commercial success.
