Per the Clinical Treatment Act, as of January 1, 2022, all state Medicaid programs are federally mandated to cover routine care (e.g., doctor visits, lab tests, imaging) for beneficiaries with life-threatening conditions who participate in clinical trials. The CLINICAL TREATMENT Act is the result of significant, sustained lobbying by 100+ patient advocacy groups and medical societies led by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.i Similar requirements for other major payers, including Medicare and employer-sponsored plans, have been in place for years.
